Conquerors of the Arctic: Papanin’s expedition marks 75th anniversary

The legendary drift of the North Pole-1 station ended off the coast of Greenland on February 19,1938, 75 years ago. The Taymyr and The Murman ice-breakers took Ivan Papanin’s expedition off a melting ice floe after 274 days of drifting. The pioneers’ experience was not wasted, as even today Russia maintains priority in high-latitude Arctic research.
