Russian checkpoint on border near Donetsk came under fire from Ukrainian side - police

Bomb disposal experts and investigators have come under fire near the Donetsk checkpoint from the Ukrainian side, Russia's police in Rostov Region said Friday. Earlier Friday, a source in law enforcement agencies said several explosions had occurred in the area near the checkpoint. "The shells had been fired from the Ukrainian territory," he said.

Police said the attack on the checkpoint took place as the group of bomb disposal experts and investigators arrived at the scene where a mortar shell had been discovered. No one was injured during the incident.

This is at least the fourth attack of the Russian territory launched from the Ukrainian side. The checkpoint of Novoshakhtinsk has been attacked twice.

The Gukovo checkpoint has also come under fire. Russian investigators have launched a criminal probe into the attacks saying they might have been aimed at killing Russian border guards who were on duty at the scene.

A spokeswoman for the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic Oksana Zhitnik told RIA Novosti Friday that Ukrainian snipers were shooting at cars driving toward the Izvarino checkpoint on the border of Luhansk Region and Russia.

These border control posts have been the major gates for refugees fleeing Ukraine and seeking asylum in Russia.

Ukrainian President Petr Poroshenko announced July 1 the end to the ceasefire between pro-Kiev forces and independence supporters in the country's east.

Just a few hours after Poroshenko lifted the ceasefire the Ukrainian Army resumed fighting on the Russian-Ukrainian border in Luhansk Region.
