Peru's security forces killed three members of Shining Path rebel group

Peru's security forces killed three members of the rebel group Shining Path during a shootout Tuesday, the country's Defense Ministry said. The owner of an apartment where the rebels were found was injured during the incident in the Echarate region, about 100 kilometers north of Machu Picchu, the ministry said.

The Echarate region holds the Camisea fields, one of the largest natural gas reserves in Latin America.

At least 30,000 people were killed during the conflict with the Shining Path in the 1980s, according to the Peruvian truth and reconciliation commission.

Since the capture of its leader, Abimael Guzman, in 1992, the Shining Path has declined in activity and only a few factions remain active in the valleys of the rivers Apurímac and Mantaro.
