Putin’s popularity at its peak, society rallies around patriotism

President Vladimir Putin’ popularity is at its peak, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. “It’s absolutely obvious that we can see phenomenal consolidation of society around the ideas of patriotism, some sort of renaissance of Russian patriotism,” he told the TVC television channel on Saturday, April 19.

He stressed that practically the whole society had supported Putin’s position on Crimea’s reunification with Russia, Itar-Tass reports.

Peskov said Putin has proved that is the president of both those who agree and those who disagree with his views.

“He [Putin] has shown that he is the president of both those who agree and those who disagree [with his views] as long as they act by law,” he said.

Peskov regretted facts of intolerance towards other people’s points of view in Russia but disagreed that they were widespread.

He recalled Putin’s words about his rejection of such intolerance. “I think this is also a good signal - as the saying goes, every cloud has its silver lining - and it was sent during the direct line [with Putin on April 17],” the spokesperson said.

Decision on Crimea made solely by Putin - Kremlin spokesperson

The decision on Crimea’s reunification with Russia was made solely by President Vladimir Putin himself, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to Itar-Tass.

“It was a personal decision of the head of state. He was the only person who could and had to make it and who made it,” Peskov told the TVC television channel on Saturday, April 19.

He recalled Putin’s remarks during the call-in session with the citizens of Russia on April 17 that he had made the decision on Crimea only after he had received the results of the Crimean referendum that bore out his position.

Peskov also said Russia is interested in the resolution of the current political crisis in neighbouring Ukraine more than other countries.
