UNSC plans to hold meeting on Ukraine with participation of UN head

The UN Security Council plans on Friday to hold a meeting on the situation around Ukraine, UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters on Thursday. According to him, at the meeting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon intends to report to the Security Council members on the results of his visits to Moscow and Kiev on March 20-22.

“As far as I know, Security Council members are discussing the format of the meeting, so at the moment we cannot announce if this will be an open or a closed-door meeting. But we expect the UN Secretary-General to report to the SC members on his visits to Ukraine and Russia last week,” he said.

The UN Security Council’s meeting, if it takes place, will be the ninth since the beginning of the month. Meanwhile, on Thursday the Ukrainian issue will be discussed at a plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly. A draft resolution that urges not to recognise the accession of Crimea to Russia on the basis of a referendum that was held on March 16 will be put to the vote at the meeting.

Two weeks ago, Russia vetoed a similar document at the UN Security Council. The UN General Assembly makes decisions by a simple majority of votes, but the GA decisions are not legally binding.
