More than 5,500 Ukrainians apply for Russian citizenship

Russia's Federal Migration Service has already received more than 5,500 applications for Russian citizenship from Ukrainian citizens, the chairman of the Federation Council's Constitutional Legislation Committee, Andrei Klishas, told reporters on Thursday.

The number of requests seeking refugee status has grown by 80% since the political crisis broke out in Ukraine, he said.

"The overall number of such applications submitted to the Federal Migration Service by Ukrainian citizens grows 20% daily. According to official estimates, 3,000 applications were received as of March 4, and 5,500 as of March 5. Most of these people want to receive Russian citizenship using simplified procedures," Klishas said.

This circumstance has prompted the Federation Council, the upper chamber of Russia's parliament, to ask the State Duma, the lower chamber, to accelerate the adoption of a bill that will allow Ukrainian citizens to seek Russian citizenship using simplified procedures.

"Our support for citizens of Ukraine, who have found themselves in a dire situation today, will be extended by Russia at all levels of power, including the legislative branch, until the situation in this country fully stabilizes and returns to normal," he said.
