Ukraine's political crisis may lead to collapse in economy - Supreme Council

The Presidium of the Supreme Council of Crimea has said that a political crisis in the country may lead to the collapse in economy and urges MPs from the Partya Regionov parliamentary faction (the Party of Regions faction) to take responsibility and form a new government.

Leadership of the Crimean parliament said that the resignation of the government led to the depreciation of the hryvnia, reduction of Ukraine's sovereign credit rating and closing-up of long-term investment projects.

"We believe that the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine must be formed immediately. Party of Regions should be made responsible for this process," the Presidium of the Crimean parliament states.

While discussing the matter of the "political situation in the country", the presidium members suggested a number of changes to the current edition of the Constitution of Crimea.

"I suggest that the presidium of the Supreme Council of Crimea should put the following issues on the agenda of the February session. First, to establish of a working group on amendments to the Constitution of Crimea and the Constitution of Ukraine concerning the countrywide poll on the status of Crimea,” said regional deputy Vladimir Klychnikov. “Second, to approve an official request to the president and the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation to act as guarantors of inviolability of the autonomous status of Crimea, as well as the inviolability of the rights and freedoms of our citizens."

Crimean parliament speaker Vladimir Konstantinov instructed lawyers to work out these issues. "We just have to appeal to the Russian Federation, taking into account that the Crimea is a Russian autonomy Russian by nationality, culture and language. Clearly, this is a multi-national territory where people of different nationalities live in peace and harmony, but only Russian federation can be our protector in this situation, he said.
