Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, will speak at the National Press Club luncheon on January 15 on sustainable economic growth and job creation.

She said sovereign debt, sustained, solid and balanced economic growth and social instability were the three major challenges to the global economy when she took the helm of the IMF in July 2011. Over the past two years, her job included navigating the fund and the world through the euro-area debt crisis, the risk of debt limit breach in the US, and the effects and the side effects of unprecedented, ultra-loose monetary policy in the US, Europe and Japan.

She also has to deal with the US inability to come through on its 2010 pledge to give the IMF more resources and give more to China and other emerging markets.

The Press Club luncheon begins promptly at 1 pm. Remarks will begin at 1:30 pm, followed by a question-and-answer session, ending at 2:30 pm.
