At least 3 dead after car explodes in Russian city of Pyatigorsk

A car exploded in the southern Russian city of Pyatigorsk in the North Caucasus region on Friday, killing at least three people, the Russian news agency TASS reported, citing a security source.

The blast in the city of Pyatigorsk took place next to the Road Traffic Safety Department, a road police source told RIA new agency.

According to TASS, the car exploded near a mall, while Interfax reported it badly damaged a traffic police building.

The powerful explosion reportedly shattered the windows of nearby houses. However, it remains unclear whether the blast was caused by an explosive device or if it was an accidental gas blast.

No one claimed immediate responsibility for the attack. There was no immediate confirmation of the number of casualties.

According to a law enforcement source, "the driver and the passengers" of the car were victims of the blast, adding that they were all possibly policemen.

The scene of the blast is being investigated, the ministry's press service said. It did not rule out the possibility that it was caused by an explosive device.
