The situation at Russia's embassy in the Libyan capital of Tripoli is calming down, and "coming under control" after an attack on Wednesday during which assailants tried to enter the compound, diplomatic sources said.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said in Msocw on Wednesday that acciording to preliminary reports, no nomebers of the Russian diplomatic mission were hurt.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reports that today a group of unknown people fired at the Russian embassy in Tripoli and made an attempt to break into the embassy.

According to preliminary data, there are no casualties among the embassy staff. The Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry told Interfax that the particulars of the incident are being clarified.

Meanwhile, a correspondent of the Al Arabiya TV channel reports that the sounds of gunshots and explosions could be heard in the vicinity of the Russian embassy. The TV channel does not give any details of the incident.

The reason for the attack was not immediately clear, but one diplomatic source said it did not appear to be directly linked to any militant group. He said a Ukrainian woman had killed a Libyan on Tuesday and then sought refuge in the Russian embassy.

The crowd had then come to protest and look for her.

The Russian Itar Tass news agency cited unnamed sources as saying that the embassy territory was now fully under control.

"In the evening hours, an armed attack was carried out on the diplomatic mission and an attempt was undertaken to get inside. The attackers opened fire and tore the Russian flag."

The sources said Libyan authorities were searching for the gunmen.

Russia's embassy in the Libyan capital of Tripoli came under attack on Wednesday and gunmen tried to enter the compound, a spokesman for Russia's Foreign Ministry said.

He said that according to preliminary reports no Russian diplomats were injured.

"In Tripoli ...a shooting occurred and there was an attempt to enter the territory of the Russian embassy in Libya," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich, speaking on Russian state television.

"According to the most preliminary information there were no injuries among members of the Russian diplomatic mission."

The sound of gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades could be heard around the embassy. No further details were immediately available.
