White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer told "Fox News Sunday" that President Obama learned about the Internal Revenue Service targeting Tea Party groups applying for tax-exempt status only after it had come out in the media.

Fox News’ Chris Wallace pressed Pfeiffer on the issue and wanted to know why the Obama administration seemed to only find out about the scandal after the story broke in the media.

“No president would get involved in an independent IRS investigation,” Pfeiffer said. “It would be wholly inappropriate.”

Tax hearings in US Congress lead to scandal

The first Congressional hearings on the breaches of tax regulations by the International Revenue Service ended in a scandal after it became clear that the IRS targeted conservative groups through deliberately creating delays in processing their applications for tax exemption.

IRS head Steven Miller, who was summoned for the hearings on Friday, was sacked later in the day after confirming reports to this effect.

Congressman of Texas Kevin Brady says the matter smacks of rot.

Friday’s hearings, he said, provided no answers as to why conservative groups were discriminated against and why the leaking of confidential IRS documents occurred.

The recent hearings will entail a long and tedious litigation, Brady said.

At least three Congressional committees are set on investigating the tax scandal.

Obama names budget official Danny Werfel as acting IRS head

US President Barack Obama named top White House budget office aide Danny Werfel to be acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, the White House said.

Obama ousted acting IRS commissioner Steven Miller late on Wednesday shortly after the revelation the IRS had targeted conservative groups for special scrutiny. The president called the targeting inexcusable, but the incident has become a embarrassment for him.

Werfel is controller of the White House Office of Management and Budget. He was in the public eye earlier this year when he briefed reporters about deep government spending cuts that went into effect March 1 under the process known as sequestration.
