Israeli Knesset sign protest letter against anti-Semitism and Russophobia in Ukraine

07.11.2011 Израиль Парламент кнессет Биньямин Нетаньяху

Thirty members of the Israeli Knesset have signed a letter addressed to the President of the European Parliament Martin Schultz in which they expressed deep concern about the growing Neo-Nazi trend in Ukraine.

                                                                                                                                                 Photo: Voice of Russia

“It has been more than half a year we receive alarming reports on the new nationalistic trend in Ukraine stirred up by the Neo-Nazi Svoboda Party, which won more than ten percent of votes in the last parliamentary elections. We are aware of the threats and slander hurled by members of that party against the Jews, the Russians, and others. These are the people who draw their inspiration from the Nazis and openly glorify the mass murderers of the SS Ukrainian Divisions”. This is remarkable that the legislators mentioned specifically the Russian community in Ukraine which still suffers from different forms of discrimination. There was no a word about the plight of Russians in similar documents in the past.

The Knesset member went much further than condemning the Neo-Nazi “Svoboda” party. They called upon their European colleagues to protest against the behavior of Ukrainian opposition. Unfortunately, the liberal and pro-Western party led by Arseniy Yatzniuk has join “Svoboda” in glorifying Nazi monsters of Ukrainian origin. “We were also shocked by the fact, that this party is not isolated at all but enjoys full cooperation of the two main opposition parties in Ukraine. Unfortunately, these parties did not protest at all against the actions and statements of their extreme partner, but even have compromised themselves by their own public glorification of Ukrainian Nazi war criminals”.

This document opens a new page in the struggle against all forms of Neo-Nazi revanchist trend which is currently spread in Europe by “Svoboda” and its allies. While the World Jewish Congress and other official Jewish organizations were criticized in the past for failing to deal with the situation in Ukraine because of the dual position of the US State Department on the issue of glorification of Nazi War criminals in Eastern Europe, the current position of the Knesset seems to be very firm and non-compromising. Surprisingly, but we find three Arab Knesset members who joined their Jewish colleges this time.

Rabbi Nissim Zeev from the Shas party told us after having signed the letter:”The Bible teaches us not to stand idly by our brother’s blood. It is true even we are talking about the blood which has been shed seventy years ago. If we will not act now, we will see the rivers of blood again. We must stop the Nazi trend both in Europe and in the midst of Wahhabi extremists in the Middle East before it will be too late”.

English translation of the original letter can be found below:

To the President of the European Parliament Mr. Martin Schultz.

Dear mr. President!

First of all, let us thank you for your activities to strengthen the values of justice and democracy in Europe and the whole world. We want to note that Europe is a more welcoming and tolerant place now, thanks to your initiatives and to the spirit you bring to the continent.

However, it has been more than half a year we receive alarming reports on the new nationalistic trend in Ukraine stirred up by the Neo-Nazi Svoboda Party, which won more than ten percent of votes in the last parliamentary elections. We are aware of the threats and slander hurled by members of that party against the Jews, the Russians, and others. These are the people who draw their inspiration from the Nazis and openly glorify the mass murderers of the SS Ukrainian Divisions.

We were also shocked by the fact, that this party is not isolated at all but enjoys full cooperation of the two main opposition parties in Ukraine. Unfortunately, these parties did not protest at all against the actions and statements of their extreme partner, but even have compromised themselves by their own public glorification of Ukrainian Nazi war criminals.

We can not stand idly by the phenomenon of neo – Nazism in any part of the world. Our duty is to speak out and to contact our colleagues around the world to join the efforts and to eliminate the symptoms which take us to the darkest times of humanity. We appreciate the strong position which the European Parliament expressed on this issue in December last year. We also want to thank you for the refusal of the EP to have any working relations with the Svoboda party and for the clarification to all forces operating in Ukraine, that no attempt of Nazism glorification will be tolerated by Europe. We hope to work together for the better and safer future of Europe and the whole world.

Sincerely.
