North Korean leadership has called the ongoing massive US-South Korean military drills an immediate threat to its sovereignty.

The North Korean ruling party’s central committee released a statement Thursday saying it regarded the joint Foal Eagle war games that have reached their climax off the Korean shore as an attempt by Washington and Seoul to push for a Korean war at all costs.

The statement came after the US and the South said they were open to a peace dialogue, a move Pyongyang discarded as a “trick to pull the veil over the eyes of the international community.”

The Committee warned the allies against escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula and stressed it would keep its troops on standby to "fight back aggressors in case of a provocation."

Tensions remain high on the peninsula after the North launched a satellite in December 2012 followed by a nuclear bomb test on February 12, 2013.
