VoR helps Russian and French Resistance vets meet after 60 years

A Russian veteran of the French Resistance from the Sverdlovsk region has asked the local governor to help him find his French brothers-in-arms and his first love, after he learnt that the regional capital of Yekaterinburg lodged its bid with the General Assembly of the International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE) to host the World Expo 2020.

Nikolai Vasenin, 93, is the only living cavalier of the Legion of Honour order. He said he had never forgotten his French friends he fought side by side with during the Second World War and the local woman he had been in love with ever since their first meeting in France.

On request of the Sverdlovsk governor and the Ekaterinburg World Expo 2020 Bid Committee, the Voice of Russia’s journalist and editor Laurent Brayard has found Jeanne Monot and the rest of Nikolai Vasenin’s comrades.

Over 60 years later, the world fair has helped restore the friendship of French and Russian soldiers who fought valiantly side by side during World War II, much like it has been connecting the two nations of Russia and France. The Voice of Russia will follow this story of reunification.
