Dmitry Medvedev presents state awards to citizens of Brazil

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has presented Russian state awards to citizens of Brazil Paulo Bezerra de Azavedo and Galina Shevchuk for contribution to development of cultural ties between the two countries.

The ceremony was held after talks between Medvedev and Brazil’s president Dilma Rousseff, and a session of the bilateral cooperation commission.

Paulo Bezerra de Azavedo has translated into Portuguese more than three dozen works of Russian literature, from Dostoevsky to Solzhenitsyn. For many years he taught Russian in major Brazilian universities.

Galina Shevchuk has lived in Brazil since 1964, and is artistic director of the choir Melody, an outfit dubbed one of the most noteworthy features of Russian community life in the state of Sao Paulo.

Medvedev stressed that not only economic relations link the two countries, but also ties in the cultural and humanitarian spheres.
