Trial of double-amputee Olympian Oscar Pistorius gets under way in South Africa

The trial of a double-amputee Olympian, Oscar Pistorius, on charges of murder of his girl-friend, is due in South Africa today.

The body of model Reeva Steenkamp was found at the athlete’s home in Pretoria, she had gunshot wounds to the head and to one arm, and also had her skull broken.

A bloody cricket bat was found nearby. According to one option, the girl wanted to have a surprise in store for him on St. Valentine’s Day. Reeva quietly sneaked into his home at night.

Pistorius took her for a robber and shot her down. He is currently in custody. If he is found guilty of premeditated murder, he may get life.


Pistorius formally charged with girlfriend's murder 

A tearful Oscar Pistorius appeared before a South African magistrate on Friday were he was formally charged with murdering his model girlfriend on Valentine's Day.

According to media reports, model Reeva Steenkamp received four gunshot wounds to the head and arm and died at the scene.

Police officers also recovered a pistol that belongs to Pistorius.

Reports say Mr.Pistorius might have mistaken his girlfriend, who wanted to present him with a Valentine’s Day gift, for an intruder.

Police don’t rule out a quarrel between the two, particularly in view of earlier scenes between them reported by the neighbors.

The 26-year-old amputee athlete listened to the accusatory speech sobbing.

Amputee athlete to face trial on murder charges

South African Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has arrived in Pretoria to face trial in connection with murder charges.

The 26-year-old double-amputee track athlete is accused of murdering his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot and killed in his Pretoria home on Thursday.

According to media reports, Mr.Pistorius might have mistaken his girlfriend, who wanted to present him with a Valentine’s Day gift, for an intruder.

Police don’t rule out a quarrel between the two.

Oscar Pistorius, a six-time Paralympic champion, is considered a national hero in South Africa.

Suspect charged with killing Pistorius’ girlfriend

South African police said on Thursday they had charged a 26-year-old man with murder after the girlfriend of paralympic track superstar Oscar Pistorius was shot dead at his Pretoria home.

A police spokeswoman did not name 26-year-old Pistorius, in accordance with South African law, but said he and the victim, Reeva Steenkamp, were the only people in the house at the time of the shooting.

South African police have arrested a world famous Paralympic sprinter, Oscar Pistorius, also known as “Blade Runner,” on charges of shooting down his girlfriend.

The body of the 30-year-old woman was discovered at his Pretoria estate by police officers who were alerted to gunshots on Thursday morning.

Police said that found a paramedic crew trying to revive the woman who died at home some time after. A 9mm pistol was also found at the scene, the media say.

The 26-year-old spring legend has been taken into custody. He was dubbed “Blade Runner” after running in the Olympics as the first double amputee. In London 2012, Pistorius reached the 400 semi-finals.
