The U.S. to compensate Philippines for damaged corals

The United States will pay the Philippines $100,000 in compensation for a coral reef damaged by a US naval ship.

Last month, the Guardian minesweeper struck one of the reefs in the Philippines’ Tubbataha natural marine park listed among UNESCO’s world heritage sites.

More than 4,000 square meters of living corals were damaged. The US also pledged to launch a number of coral protection programs.
