Cyril and Methodius Readings get under way in Rome

The Cyril and Methodius Readings have begun at the Russian Scientific and Cultural Center in Rome as part of the celebration of the 1150th anniversary of the creation of the first Slavonic alphabet by Saints Cyril and Methodius.

The first liturgy in Old Church Slavonic was conducted at the Church of the Holy Virgin Mary in Rome in 867.

Brothers Cyril and Methodius who devised the first alphabet used to transcribe Old Church Slavonic asked Pope John VIII to allow the use of Slavonic in church services.
