S. Korea, US to start joint manoeuvres in Yellow Sea

South Korea and the United States are launching joint manoeuvres in the Yellow Sea.

The US San Francisco nuclear submarine and a missile cruiser arrived at the Jinhae naval base, 400 kilometres southeast of Seoul, to take part.

The manoeuvres will be held against the backdrop of North Korea’s completing preparations for a third nuclear bomb test.

Pyongyang has threatened to set off an underground nuclear explosion in retaliation for the imposition by the UN Security Council of additional sanctions on North Korea due to Pyongyang’s test-firing a long-range rocket in December last year.

North Korea is banned from doing this by the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. North Korea set off the first two nuclear blasts in 2006 and 2009 respectively.
