Bulgarians favor construction of Russian nuclear power plant

Over 60% of Bulgarians have come out for the Russia-assisted construction of the Belene nuclear power plant, according to the Central Elections Commission, after 70% of the ballots, cast in Sunday’s referendum, have been counted.

Now the referendum organizers have the right to take the nuclear plant issue to parliament. Russia and Bulgaria signed an agreement on building the second nuclear power plant in the city of Belene, in the north of the country, back in 2006. But Sofia later gave up the project for security reasons, among other things.

Russia is building nuclear power plants in many countries, plants that are highly reliable and can even resist a direct hit by a falling plane, or a powerful earthquake.
