President Putin arrives in Brussels for Russia - EU summit
The summit will begin on Thursday evening with an informal dinner for the Russian Head of State hosted by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
The official part of the summit will be held on Friday.
The main topic is expected to be energy cooperation between Russia and the European Union and Russia plans to raise the issue of a visa free travel regime between Russia and the EU.
EU Commission’s spokeswoman Pia Hansen has told reporters the 30th EU-Russia summit will take place in Brussels on December 20-21.
Ms. Hansen said this regular working summit will give an overlook of the cooperation results so far.
She informed reporters the EU would be represented by European Council’s president Herman Van Rompuy, European Commission’s chief Jose Manuel Barroso, EU High Representative Catherine Ashton and EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht.
Russia will be represented by President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and several other ministers, Pia Hansen said.
President Vladimir Putin is due to attend the forthcoming Russia-EU summit meeting in Brussels on December 21st, according to the Kremlin’s press service.
The European delegation will be led by the European Council President, Herman Van Rompuy, and the European Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso.
The summit is expected to focus on the entire range of bilateral relations, including trade and economic cooperation, interaction in the field of power production, as well as the development of the Partnership for Modernization initiative.
Some of the other subjects to be taken up are prospects for the introduction of visa-free travel between Russia and the EU, and also the priorities of Russian G-20 presidency.
