Amsterdam sets up ‘scum villages’ to protect law-abiding residents from unruly neighbors

Unruly neighbors will be exiled to a special camp made up of container housing units with only basic amenities, where they will live under police supervision for a six-month period, a new initiative of Amsterdam’s mayor Eberhard van der Laan has been announced.

According to Amsterdam-based daily Het Parool, 1.3 million euros have already been allocated for the project aimed to deal with the 13,000 complaints of anti-social behavior the city received annually.

A failure in a compulsory six-month course would lead to eviction and homelessness for the camp dwellers.

The camps have already been dubbed as ‘scum villages’ as reminder about last year’s suggestion of right-wing anti-immigrant politician Geert Wilders, leader of the Party for Freedom, that “repeat offenders should be forcibly removed from their neighborhood and sent to a village for scum.”

The initiative will take effect in January.
