McCain says Patriot missiles on Turkey border may down Syria jets

US Senator John McCain has assumed that Patriot missiles deployed on the Syria-Turkey border could intercept Syrian warplanes.

He said the anti-aircraft system could help the Syrian opposition topple Bashar Assad’s regime, the US News and World Report cited the senator as saying.

“Pilots are not going to fly into certain death. I don't care how brave they are. You shoot down one or two of them, and they're not going to fly there again. They may like Bashar al-Assad, but they like to live a little more,” he said.

Turkey asked that Patriot missile systems be deployed on its soil to protect it from stray missiles that had been penetrating its defenses the past few days due to escalating combat on its border. A decision to this effect will be made next week.
