Joint Russian-Norwegian expedition detects no radiation leak

A joint Russian-Norwegian expedition has detected no radiation leak from the drowned radioactive objects off the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in the Kara Sea.

This was stated by the head of the expedition that worked on board the Russian research vessel “Ivan Petrov” Alexander Nikitin.

The expedition included Russian and Norwegian researchers as well as IAEA experts.

This was the fourth such expedition, while the first three were conducted between 1992 and 1994.

Before 1992, the Kara Sea was the key location where hard radioactive waste from the Soviet nuclear submarines was drowned.
