Palestine's bid for full membership at UN

Palestine's bid for full membership at UN

On September 27 Palestine plans to apply for a non-member status of a state under occupation to the United Nations, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas told a press conference in Ramallah on the West Bank

He stressed that 133 member-states of the UN General Assembly have already recognized Palestine as a state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and that Palestine has embassies in all these countries.

At the same time, Abbas stressed the presence of pressure on the part of many countries, especially, the USA and a number of West European countries, which do not want Palestine to gain international recognition as a state. Last September the Palestinian leader filed an application to the UN General Assembly, asking for a full-fledged membership in the organization for his country.

That attempt of the Palestinians ended in failure because of the differences in the UN Security Council.
