Andrei Kavun started making his “Sherlock Holmes” in the autumn of 2011 when “Holmes-mania” spread across the world. An action film “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” by Guy Ritchie was screened in many countries. Meanwhile, the European audience actively discussed another British movie series – “Sherlock Holmes” where Benedict Cumberbatch played the main character. The American CBS channel presented its version of the story of the famous detective and his friend doctor Watson but in this case, Holmes’ role was played by an actress.

However, “Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson” has been a famous and popular film of Arthur Conon Doyle’s stories among the Russian audience. It was filmed by Igor Maslennikov in the 80s. Moreover, even Britain recognized the popular Russian actor Vasily Livanov, who played the main character. As “the Best Holmes” he was awarded an honourary MBE, Member of the Order of the British Empire.

Sherlock Holmes has been filmed over 200 times since the beginning of cinematography. Andrei Kavun, believes that this can be done another thousand times. This is perfect literature for making films.

“Holmes and Watson are characters which were screened, are screening and will be screened. I must say without exaggeration that this is like Hamlet. However, a director should venture upon this with something new of his own. Sherlock Holes is literature for young people. Traditionally films are engaged in a search for the meaning of life, but this is a pure detective genre, adventure. In short, this is a direct test for professional self-determination,” Andrei Kavun said.

He has filmed 8 different detective stories. Each film is a composition of 2-3 stories by Arthur Conon Doyle, including famous ones and those which have not been screened yet.

It took 161 days to shoot the film. The environment of Britain was created near St. Petersburg where special street film sets in the Victorian-style of England were created. Computer graphics were also used to create a natural environment, including mist, cobbled streets and various sign boards.
