Russia will not support new draft resolution on Syria

Russia will not support the UN-submitted draft resolution on Syria, said Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov. He called the document "still unbalanced." All the  requirements it contains are addressed to the government, with nothing pertaining to the opposition. According to Gatilov, this project closely replicates the one earlier blocked by Russia and China in the UN Security Council.

The deputy minister also said that Russia does not intend to persuade Syrian President Bashar Assad to accept the Arab League’s proposal on sending a joint LAS and UN peacekeeping force to Damascus.

Russia opposes any regime change, or removal of President Assad. In addition, Moscow insists on recognizing the role of the opposition in the current violence.
