Another Russia-NATO Council meeting is due in Brussels today to focus on prospects for cooperation in the field of missile defence.
The Russian delegation is led by the Chief of the General Staff Nikolai Makarov. The US plan to set up a missile defence system that would protect its territory against ballistic missiles is a major problem in Russian-US relations.
Moscow has been pressing Washington into offering legal guarantees that the missile defence system for Europe will not threaten Russia’s security.
In November last year, President Dmitry Medvedev made public a set of measures that Russia may take to retaliate for a deployment of the missile defence system in Europe.
