The Web site “Wikileaks”, known for its publications of leaked secret information, has received the Australian “Walkley” prize “for outstanding contributions to journalism”.

This information has appeared on the “Walkley’s” Web site.

The “Walkley” prize is often called “Australian Pulitzer” (“Pulitzer” is a prestigious US prize for achievements in literature, journalism, music and theater).

The jury says that it has chosen “Wikileaks” because the site had done much for the development of journalism. The jury calls the site’s founder Julian Assange a brave fighter for freedom of speech.

The awarding ceremony took place on Sunday, but Mr. Assange was unable to come to Australia. He is currently in the UK, awaiting for a court’s decision, under which he will probably be extradited to Sweden.
