The Turkish Parliament has passed a government measure to extend by another year the army operation against Kurdish separatist hideouts in northern Iraq. The offensive, which includes air raids, has been conducted since 2007.
In the period since 1984, the separatist organization known as the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, has been waging a campaign of guerilla violence for an independent Kurdish homeland in southeastern Turkey. The war has claimed about 40 thousand lives.
The United Nations and the European Union list the PKK as terrorists. (RIAN)
