Efforts to establish external borders of the Russian Arctic shelf will be supplemented by the outcomes of the joint Russian-German scientific expedition Lena-2011. According to the expedition’s head Jörn Thiede, who is also chairman of the European Arctic Commission, one can safely expect the Russian bid to be satisfied.

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, any coastal state has a sovereign right to explore mineral resources on the continental shelf that is officially recognized to be part of its territory.

If the underwater Lomonosov and Mendeleev ridges are proved to be a geological continuation of the Russian mainland, the country will become authorized to develop huge oil and gas fields located there.
