Russia’s RosHydroMet meteorological service will clear the Arctic of industrial waste which amassed in the region for decades, the agency’s head Alexander Frolov said.
Frolov made this announcement as he addressed a meeting of environmental monitoring officials in Arkhangelsk in the north of Russia.
RosHydroMet will be able to dispose of waste with the help of a special expedition fleet.
The Mikhail Somov research vessel will be the first to begin the cleanup operation. The Mikhail Somov is responsible for delivering cargoes to polar stations.
