The second experimental model of the Russian T-50 fighter plane was successfully tested on Thursday. The plane rose from the airfield of the plant where it had been built in Komsomolsk-on-Amur (Russia’s Far East) and spent about an hour in flight. It was piloted by tester Sergey Bogdan.

The main characteristics of the plane are kept secret. It is revealed, however, that it belongs to the class of heavy planes, can reach the speed of 2.1 thousand km per hour and its range is 5.5 thousand km. In full, the plane meets all the latest requirements for warplanes.

Pilot Magomed Tolboev, decorated a Hero of Russia, shares his view of the new plane:

“It’s absolutely new in everything – technical data, available power and on-board equipment… It is many-functional, and the requirements for such planes are very strict – the more so, if we take into account that, most probably, this model will be used for the next 50 years without drastic changes in the construction.”

Using composite materials and other innovative technologies makes this plane practically unnoticeable for radars of all kinds. The plain’s navigating devices of the latest generation allow it to fly both at day and night, in any weather, at supersonic speed. In fact, it’s a real revolution in aircraft construction.

A correspondent of the RosBusinessConsulting media group Sergey Starikov says:

“A plane of this kind is another breakthrough in strengthening Russia’s security. Russia’s military partners already have similar planes – this means that Russia must have them as well. Otherwise, several years from now, we might find ourselves lagging behind other countries.”

The idea of creating a highly innovative fighter plane appeared practically simultaneously in the Soviet Union and in the US in the late 1980s. However, for a number of reasons, caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia had to suspend this project for some time. The US, meanwhile, continued working on a fighter plane of the fifth generation, which received the name “F-22 Raptor”. It has turned out, however, that the construction of one such plane would have cost $ 350 mln, and the whole project would have demanded $ 65 bln, and the Pentagon gave up this idea.

The new Russian plane is both cheaper and better than its American still unborn analogue. It is planned that the Russian Air Force will have these planes beginning from 2015.
