Ship crews stuck in Sakhalin ice face no threat

According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry , there is no danger to the life or health of the crewmembers aboard the ships that have been gripped by Sakhalin Bay ice. 10 vessels have been stuck in the area for almost 24 hours now.

10 vessels have been stuck in the area for almost 24 hours now.

2 of them have asked for help to make it to the open water, namely the fishery mother ship Sodruzhestvo, and the Professor Kizevetter research vessel.

There are almost 400 people aboard the ships in distress, including 340 on board the Sodruzhestvo ship.

The two vessels’ food and fuel reserves will last for 75 days.

The tugboat Rubin and the ice-class motor ship Irbis have been sent to the rescue. Irbis is due to arrive at the disaster area later today.
