At an emergency session on Tuesday the Seim of Latvia rejected the opposition’s demand for the resignation of Foreign Minister Valdis Kristovskis.

The deputies of the opposition Harmony Centre and For Better Latvia Movement have demanded the resignation of Valdis Kristovskis in view of his ultra nationalist views. The correspondence between the chief Latvian diplomat and a Latvian doctor, Aivar Slutsis living in the USA was made public.

The latter, in one of his e-mails to the Foreign Minister, said that he would not be able to treat Russians in the same way as Latvians and that in case of a shortage of medicines, he would deny Russians their right to them. In a return letter to Aivar Slutsis Kristovskis writes that he approves “both his assessment and vision of the situation”. In another message the American doctor speaks about Latvia’s national policy on the whole and voices his concern over the loyalty of some Latvian politicians towards Russians as “white and Christians”.

Moreover, he suggests that Latvia’s authorities should reconsider all citizenships that were granted to its citizens after 1991, for the purpose of sorting out the ranks of Latvians and expelling as many Russians as possible from the country.

The radical ideas of Aivar Slutsis are shocking, Academician Sergei Kolesnikov from the Russian Academy of Sciences said in an interview with the Voice of Russia.

A statement, made by the Latvian doctor to the effect that he would not be able to treat Russians in the same way as his compatriots, as it seems to me, smells like racism and makes us return to the epoch of fascist concentration camps, where Doctor Josef Mengele experimented on the “sub-men” – this is how fascists called the representatives of other races.

Therefore, I as a medic, say that Slutsis has no idea of the key principles of the Oath of Hippocrates, which has been in existence for more than 2,000 years now. And it says that a doctor offers help irrespective of race, sex or religion. So I do not believe that it is possible to regard him as a doctor. If he is guided by political, national or any other restrictions while offering medical help, he is not a doctor. We can say that this is a politician. And this is quite a different profession.

Politicians do not have the right to express such odious racist views either. And the Russian delegation has once again paid attention to this fact. On Tuesday it submitted for consideration by the 3rd Committee of the UN General Assembly the draft resolution on the inadmissibility of escalation of modern forms of racism.

Since 2005, similar resolutions have been adopted on Russia’s initiative. And with every passing year the number of countries supporting this project is growing. 124 delegations voted for it last year, and only the USA voted against it. Both the consideration and the adoption of the resolution at the plenary session of the UN General Assembly are set for the middle of December.
