Russia marks the Day of Family, Love and Faithfulness  on the 8th of July. The city of Murom is seeing special celebrations as these were its citizens who proposed to mark the holiday several years ago.

The people of Murom come to the Holy Trinity Convent to revere Saints Pyotr and Fevronia, husband and wife, buried there. A Christian legend about these happy spouses prompted the idea of the Day of Family. This year, the celebrations were headed by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill who conducted a service in the Murom’s Convent.

People like the holiday. A local  woman says it’s one of her favorite. "Each time when I go to the Family Day celebrations I feel happy and enthusiastic. I’m feeling like a flying butterfly," she jokes.

A young girl named Maria is dreaming to find her love and wants the holiday to make young people treat marriage more responsibly and change their life priorities. She believes it essential for the spouses to love and respect each other.

Many weddings were planned for this day, as people believe the marriage to be long and happy if it is concluded on the Family Day. However, the Orthodox rules don’t allow nuptials at the last days of the Lent. The city’s mayor Vladimir Kachevan  found a way out of the situation:

"Several years ago we organized a ritual of engagement which a preface to applying for marriage certificate. The young couples welcomed the initiative and since then we’ve been conducting engagement ceremonies according to  Russian traditions."

People who have been married for a long time will be decorated with a special medal. It is given by the president’s spouse Svetlana Medvedeva who sponsors the Family Day. The medal carries Pyotr and Fevronia and a  chamomile which is the symbol flower for the holiday. In olden times, chamomile was  a love oracle  and now it is a symbol of a happy marriage.
