The Russian company Vertolyoti Rossii, or Russian Helicopters, and Italy's Agusta Westland agreed to set up a joint venture to assemble the AW139 helicopters in Russia in July 2008 in a move endorsed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berslusconi.

The AW139 is a medium twin-engine helicopter, which can carry up to 15 passengers and be used in offshore, emergency and rescue operations.
