Nanotechnology crucial for aero-space engines

The world's only specialized forum of engine manufacturers in the aero-space industry, "Dvigateli"- 2010 opens in Moscow on Wednesday. The designers and producers of engines for aircraft, space exploration, power generation, vehicles and ships from 30 countries will attend the forum. Aircraft engine construction is considered to be one of the most complicated areas in mechanics.

The world's only specialized forum of engine manufacturers in the aero-space industry, "Dvigateli"- 2010 opens in Moscow on Wednesday. The designers and producers of engines for aircraft, space exploration, power generation, vehicles and ships from 30 countries will attend the forum.

Aircraft engine construction is considered to be one of the most complicated areas in mechanics. A turbine rotates at a speed of tens of thousands revolutions per minute at temperatures between 1.5 to 2.0 thousand degrees Celsius. Calculations, technology and materials needed for the production of an advanced gas turbine jet engine should be at the highest level. This is the reason why only four countries in the world possess the scientific, technical and industrial potential to produce any type of aviation engines for any purpose independently. These countries are the U.S., Britain, France and Russia.

Russia's aircraft engine industry is now regaining its position in the world market after several years of recession, says the editor-in-chief of the aero-space journal, "Vzleot" or "Take-off", Andrei Fomin.

"The government has decided that development means the integration of companies that have worked separately in the past," says Andrei Fomin. "This is, first and foremost, the United Engine-Production Corporation. Another holding company is being created on the basis of the Salyut" production plant in Moscow. This will pave the way for more precise models of aircraft engines and avoidance of unnecessary expenditure on competitive projects. Consequently, the producers can concentrate on developing state-of-the-art engines that guarantee breakthroughs in both civil and military aircraft engine construction," Andrei Fomin said.

The best design bureaus in the world are now engaged in developing a fifth generation engine. This could be achieved by using nanotechnology. Two Russian engines of this category will be presented at the Moscow International Show, says Andrei Fomin.

"One of them is the SAM-146 engine for the family of medium-range aircraft, Superjet-100, of the Sukhoi Company," says Andrei Fomin. "This is a joint development by the Russian company "Saturn" with French aviation engine-makers. The second one that will be produced in the future is the PD-14 which is developed by the United Engine-Production Corporation. It is designed for short-range and medium-range aircraft," Andrei Fomin said.

At present, fierce competition is underway among the basic developers and producers of aircraft engines. Traditionally, engines for military aircraft predominate in Russian exports. Experts in several countries give preference to these aircraft, says Andrei Fomin.

The International Show "Dvigateli"- 2010 is staged once in two years. This year the forum will be held from the 14th to 17th of April with the involvement of experts from 130 companies.
