The European Union has given the go-ahead for a military mission to start on April 7 to train 2,000 Somali soldiers battling an Islamist insurgency. The mission, to be led by Spain and involve around 100 troops plus several dozens of additional staff, aims to strengthen Somalia’s US-backed transitional government, which has desperately been trying to stabilize the situation in the strife-torn East African nation. Germany said it would contribute 20 soldiers for the mission. France and Britain have also promised to participate.
