Russia to extend border on Sea of Okhotsk continental shelf
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Andrei Nesterenko has voiced hope that a UN Commission will nod Moscow’s push for extending its border on the Sea of Okhotsk continental shelf. Briefing reporters in Moscow on Thursday, Nesterenko recalled that an application to this effect was submitted to the UN back in 2001 – a document that he said includes a scientific argumentation of Russia’s territorial claims over a part of the Sea of Okhotsk shelf. “The
draft application stipulates the extension of the continental shelf in the Sea of Okhotsk beyond 200 nautical miles from the original line”, Nesterenko explained, citing Russia’s intent to start exploring natural resources in the area as soon as possible.
