Vera Gornostaeva: there is no music without love

The great piano player, professor Vera Gornostaeva has been teaching in the Moscow Conservatory for 50 years. She turned 80 on the 1st of October and she is still energetic, slim, elegant and charming. The double anniversary of one of the oldest teachers of the Moscow Conservatory is marked by the festival, dedicated to Vera Gornostaeva.

The great piano player, professor Vera Gornostaeva has been teaching in the Moscow Conservatory for 50 years. She turned 80 on the 1st of October and she is still energetic, slim, elegant and charming. The double anniversary of one of the oldest teachers of the Moscow Conservatory is marked by the festival, dedicated to Vera Gornostaeva. It will unite her pupils of different generations and the level of fame, playing to honor their teacher. Vera Gornostaeva has not performed for several years, since she broke her arm, but we can still enjoy her music records.



Vera Gornostaeva, who is the great performer of romantic classical music, used to play around one hundred concerts a year, traveling all over the Soviet Union. She became famous and admired after a series of TV programs, where she played music and told the audience about it. However, she was unknown abroad, as the Soviet cultural officials did not let her out of the country. Times have, fortunately, changed and Vera Gornostaeva became famous all over the musical world and highly assessed for her musical and pedagogical talent. “Gornostaeva’s teaching method” became talked about in Europe, Asia, and the US as a miracle. She taught music and gave master-classes in Italy, France, in Japan, the US, Germany and Great Britain. Among her pupils there are more than 50 prize-winners of the international competitions –performing musicians of different nationalities. They include Russian pianists Alexander Slobodyanik and Maxim Filippov, a Croatian Ivo Pogorelić, a Georgian pianist Eteri Andzhaparidze, a Japanese Ayako Uehara who won the Tchaikovsky music competition in Moscow and many others. Vera Gornostaeva is highly assessed by her colleagues-musicians “Vera is a unique treasure,-wrote a famous Japanese pianist Hiroko Nakamura in the preface to the Japanese edition of Vera Gornostaeva’s book “Two hours after the concert”. “She is a top-class performer and professor. Her mind that survived all the changes in the Russian society is hard as steel and flexible at the same time”.

Vera Gornostaeva is sure that this is love, that is the basis of the relations between a teacher and a pupil. Nothing will work out without love to music. A teacher can always feel whether a pupil loves him or not. I was lucky to seldom have pupils who disliked me . Mutual respect is also important. Sometimes, there is a generation gap between a teacher and a pupil –they are different and it is hard to deal with them. Nothing can be reached with orders alone.


ANNOUNCER Recently, people in the musical circle have spoken about the disappearance of the national performing schools, in particular, the famous Russian piano school. Vera Gornostaeva, who continues the traditions of the famous Russian music teacher Henrich Neigauz, disagrees with it



I have worked in Palermo for 5 years, then for five years in Munich, each year I give master-classes in the US and France, and finally I have worked in Japan for 15 years,-says Vera Gornostaeva. I’m not boasting, I just prove that I have a right to speak about the Russian music school and may compare it to the Italian, German, American, Japanese and French, due to my work abroad. I say, that nobody can destroy the Russian school, it exists and will be existing. I’ve headed the jury of the TV competition “Nutcracker” for many years, where children from all Russian cities performed. They were small children from remote regions, from Ural and Siberia and they played very well. Teaching of music is not dying in the regions, on the contrary – it is flourishing. Teachers have a hard life there but it creates a need in spiritual values. When a talented child comes to them they devote their soul to work with him, Russia still has a high level of teaching music and the Russian piano school is not a legend, it is real.
